New York University's
ninth-ranked men's basketball team fell to 11th-ranked Swarthmore College, 71-70, on Vinny DeAngelo's buzzer-beating three-pointer in the final game of the Scholars Classic on Sunday at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.
Spencer Freedman scored a game-high 24 points for the Violets on 9-of-15 shooting from the field and 5-of-9 from long range, in addition to seven assists, four rebounds and a block.
Neither team led by more than five points in a closely-contested first half which featured six ties and eight lead changes. The Garnet led 31-29 with time waning in the opening period, but Freedman drained a deep triple to beat the buzzer and give the Violets a 32-31 edge at the break.
The second half began with more back-and-forth play until a 14-5 NYU run, capped off by another Freedman trey at 7:46, gave the hosts their biggest lead of the game (57-44).
NYU maintained a nine-point lead, 65-56, with 3:41 to play but Swarthmore went on to outscore the Violets 15-5 over the rest of regulation. DeAngelo cemented the comeback with his buzzer-beating, bank shot triple from the right wing after an NYU missed free throw with four seconds on the clock.
Konrad Kiszka added 13 points (5-of-6 FG, 3-of-3 3PT) for the Violets and
Zay Freeney had 12 (5-of-9 FG, 2-of-4 3PT).
Emmanuel Onuama contributed six points, a team-high-tying five boards and a game-high four blocks.
As a team, NYU shot 42 percent from the floor (29-of-69), 32 percent from distance (8-of-25) and 55.6 percent from the stripe (5-of-9).
Next up for the Violets is their first road game of the season, heading to Yeshiva University on Saturday, November 18, for an 8:30 p.m. tip in upper Manhattan.
