Three Violets recorded 12-or-more kills and four had double-doubles as New York University's
11th-ranked women's volleyball team defeated 14th-ranked Wesleyan University (CT) in four sets on Sunday at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.
Haley Holz led the way with a match-high 20 kills while
Grace Nelson finished with 16 and
Ella Weider had 12. It was the fourth straight victory for NYU, winning via set scores of 25-22, 25-20, 24-26, 25-21, to improve to 15-2 on the season.
"Going into this matchup, Wesleyan had one of the highest hitting percentages in the country and we're the best blocking team in the country so I was really excited to see how this matchup would go," said head coach
Andrew Brown.
"We did a really good job of staying physical in key moments, especially after winning the first two sets. Wesleyan made a lot of adjustments and separated early in the third set, but we closed it out strong which gave us confidence going into that fourth and deciding set."
The Violets built a seven point lead in the first, 19-12, but Wesleyan clawed all the way back, scoring six straight late to come within one (23-22). NYU scored the next two points though, finished by a
Leela Anvekar kill, to take the opening set.
NYU scored the first six points of the second but the Cardinals stayed in it, eventually coming back within one at 17-16. The Violets outscored Wesleyan 8-4 the rest of the way, however, as a Holz kill completed the 25-20 victory.
The Cardinals seized control in the third, establishing an eight-point lead at 16-8. NYU responded by scoring the next six points to make it 16-14, including back-to-back kills from Holz. Wesleyan later had set point at 24-22, but the Violets tied the score at 24 before a pair of Cardinal kills forced a fourth.
"Our biggest test of adversity happened in sets three and four when we really shifted our offensive dynamic," Brown added. "It made it really hard for them to match up. But, overall for both sides to hit below their normal efficiency, I think it was a gritty battle of defense and strong blocking."
NYU settled in the fourth and led the majority of the set, hitting a match-high .366 in the frame with a pair of Nelson kills clinching the hard-fought victory.
Holz added 11 digs to her match high in kills for a double-double. Nelson recorded eight digs, three aces and two blocks in addition to her 16 kills and Weider chipped in four digs and four blocks as well.
Three other Violets recorded double-doubles as
Lindsey Hirano (match-high 28 digs, 10 assists),
Ava Launsbach (match-high 25 assists, 14 digs) and
Dominique Drust (15 assists, 12 digs) shared passing and setting responsibilities.
Next up for the Violets is University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #2 on Sunday, October 8. NYU takes on Emory University and University of Rochester in Chicago, IL.
