Spencer Freedman dropped 21 points to lead New York University's men's basketball team in a 69-64 road victory at University of Chicago in the Windy City on Friday night.
It was the Violets' (12-1, 1-1 UAA) first University Athletic Association (UAA) win of the season and evened the team's league record at 1-1.
Freedman's team-high 21 points paced NYU while rookie
Quinn Clark added 16 points on 7-of-10 field-goal shooting in the victory.
Chicago scored the first basket of the night but NYU led for most of the first half, taking a 21-17 advantage halfway through the opening period after
Zay Freeney's layup.
The Maroons took a slim lead soon after and neither side led by more than three points for the remainder of the first. But, Freedman converted a layup with just over a minute to play in the half to give the Violets a 38-37 advantage at intermission.
NYU never trailed in the second half to claim a quality Association win on the road as the Violets bounced back from a 20-point loss in their UAA opener at Brandeis last weekend.
Freedman (12) and Clark (10) combined for 22 second-half points to lead NYU in crunch time. The Violets' defense stepped up in the final 20 minutes as well, limiting Chicago to 26.7 percent shooting from the floor and 8.3 percent shooting from deep in the final frame.
NYU allowed just five points from the hosts in the final four minutes of the contest to secure the victory.
Freedman shot 7-of-14 from the field, 3-of-5 from distance and 4-of-4 from the stripe for his 21 points, adding four rebounds and two assists.
Clark posted five rebounds and a steal in addition to his 16 points.
Hayden Peek contributed nine points (2-of-3 FG, 5-of-7 FT), four boards, an assist and a block. Freeney chipped in eight points, five rebounds and two assists.
NYU shot 48.9 percent (23-of-47) from the field and 20-of-23 from the free-throw line while forcing 13 turnovers in a balanced effort.
The Violets will look to secure back-to-back UAA triumphs when they take on Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday, January 15, at 12:00 p.m. (central).
