New York University's men's basketball team suffered a 68-64 defeat to Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday afternoon to conclude the Violets' midwest road trip.
NYU is now 12-2 overall and 1-2 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play.
Four Violets scored in double figures in the loss, led by
Spencer Freedman's game-high 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field.
NYU only led for 2:30 of the first half but kept it close throughout, tying the score at 29-29 with just under four minutes on the clock after
Hayden Peek's bucket.
The Bears led by five, 37-32, with less than 30 seconds to play in the opening period, but
Nikola Lipovic buried a trey with seven seconds remaining to cut NYU's deficit to 37-35 at the break.
WashU opened the second half strong, establishing a 13-point lead (52-39) eight minutes in on Kevin Davet's layup. The Violets stayed in it though, embarking on a 15-5 run over the next five minutes to come within three (57-54).
The Bears stayed in front the rest of the way, however, despite NYU making it a three-point game once again with 52 seconds left.
Freedman added four assists, two steals and a rebound to his game high in scoring.
Quinn Clark filled the stat sheet with 14 points, eight boards, two assists and two steals.
Lipovic finished with 13 points (4-of-6 from deep) while
Michael Savarino added 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Up next for the Violets is their first home UAA game of the year on Friday, January 20, against Emory University at 7:30 p.m.
