WashU Outlasts Men's Basketball

Violets fall 68-64 in close UAA contest

New York University's men's basketball team suffered a 68-64 defeat to Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday afternoon to conclude the Violets' midwest road trip.

NYU is now 12-2 overall and 1-2 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play.

Four Violets scored in double figures in the loss, led by Spencer Freedman's game-high 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field.

NYU only led for 2:30 of the first half but kept it close throughout, tying the score at 29-29 with just under four minutes on the clock after Hayden Peek's bucket.

The Bears led by five, 37-32, with less than 30 seconds to play in the opening period, but Nikola Lipovic buried a trey with seven seconds remaining to cut NYU's deficit to 37-35 at the break.

WashU opened the second half strong, establishing a 13-point lead (52-39) eight minutes in on Kevin Davet's layup. The Violets stayed in it though, embarking on a 15-5 run over the next five minutes to come within three (57-54).

The Bears stayed in front the rest of the way, however, despite NYU making it a three-point game once again with 52 seconds left.

Freedman added four assists, two steals and a rebound to his game high in scoring. Quinn Clark filled the stat sheet with 14 points, eight boards, two assists and two steals.

Lipovic finished with 13 points (4-of-6 from deep) while Michael Savarino added 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Up next for the Violets is their first home UAA game of the year on Friday, January 20, against Emory University at 7:30 p.m.
