Women's Soccer Runs Away from Mt. St. Mary in Season Opener

Eight Violets scored in a dominant victory

Captain Gabriella Funk netted a brace to lead eight different goal scorers in a dominant, 9-0 victory for New York University's women's soccer team over Mount Saint Mary College in the Violets' 2022 season opener on Thursday night.

Playing on the campus of New Jersey Institute of Technology, NYU attempted a whopping 36 shots while limiting the Knights to just three of their own in the convincing win.

Funk got the scoring started in the 12th minute, tapping in a shot off of a corner kick assist from graduate transfer Tate Jordan. The captain secured her brace in the 20th, finishing an unassisted breakaway to make it 2-0 NYU.

Jessica Tonthat recorded her first collegiate goal just 23 seconds after Funk, then junior Kelli Keady got in on the action with a tally in the 24th.

Rookie Hunter Hoelscher also scored in her collegiate debut, firing a shot past the Knights' keeper from the top left of the box to the far side in the 43rd as the Violets led 5-0 at the half.

After the break, Catie Collins picked up her first goal of the season, finding the back of the net on an assist from Brooke Buonomo at the 64:16 mark. Seven minutes later, Hoelscher assisted Summer Steadman who launched a shot over the keeper's head into the top right corner of the net.

The Violets' eighth goal of the game came on a long ball from Rachel Kim in the back third, finding Jordan on the break who lofted a shot over the charging keeper (78').

Izze Ching concluded the scoring in the 82nd with an unassisted tally for the second goal of her career.

Riley Felsher made the Violets' lone save of the night as she and Tyler Hawkins split the game in goal.

Next up for NYU is the first road fixture of the season, heading up to Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY, on Sunday, September 4. Kick off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
