New York University's softball team maintained its red-hot finish to the 2022 season, sweeping Hunter College in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Randall's Island. The Violets blanked Hunter 8-0 in the opener and took game two 9-3.
Erin Scott shined on the same day she was
announced as an All-UAA honoree, going yard in both games and accounting for two of NYU's five homers on the day.
The Violets concluded the year with a four-game win streak and won six of their final seven contests, posting an 8-2 record over the last 10.
Game One: NYU 8, Hunter 0 (Five Innings)
Hannah Becker was the first Violet to clear the fence in game one, hitting a three-run shot to left in the top of the third for a 3-0 lead. Scott then hit a two-run homer in the fourth to highlight a four-run frame as the visitors built a 7-0 advantage.
Samantha Burggraf came through with an RBI double in the top of the fifth to secure the five-inning shutout victory.
Marina Egbert twirled a near-perfect game, allowing just two hits with no walks and six strikeouts across a complete-game win. The sophomore finished 2022 with a 9-10 record and team-leading 2.96 ERA.
Scott went 3-for-3 at the plate; her two-run home run was her team-leading fourth of the season. Becker's homer was the first of her career and her three RBIs were a career best.
Sophia Leon went 3-for-4, tying her career high in hits, scored twice and stole a base.
Lizzy Smith finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs, two stolen bases and a double.
Lauren Kong also had multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Game Two: NYU 9, Hunter 3
NYU scored two runs in each of the first three innings, beginning with RBI singles from Kong and
Kalena Paredes in the top of the first.
A Becker sac fly and Scott RBI single gave the Violets two more in the second, followed by a two-run homer off the bat of
Madi Hand for a 6-0 lead after three innings.
Hunter scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-2 before both sides were held scoreless in the fifth.
NYU's display of power continued in the sixth as Scott and Kong both launched solo home runs for an 8-2 advantage entering the final frame. Kong's long ball was the first of her career in her final game.
Each team plated a lone run in the seventh, with the Violets' coming on an RBI double from Paredes, as NYU secured a 9-3 win in the final game of the 2022 season.
Senior
Maggie Swan hurled a complete-game victory to conclude her career, striking out four across seven strong innings while allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk.
A trio of fellow seniors made the most of their final outing as Scott, Paredes and Kong each went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs apiece.
Smith had a strong second game as well, finishing 3-for-4 with a run scored. The three hits tied her career high.
The Violets stellar play late in the season propelled them to a 17-20 overall record. Becker, Hand, Smith, Burggraf, Leon and Egbert lead 13 returners who will look to carry the momentum into 2023.
