The New York University women's tennis team traveled to Waltham, MA, on Sunday, April 3, to face off against University Athletic Association (UAA) foe and
36th-ranked Brandeis University, coming away with a 5-4 victory in the Violets' final dual match of the season.
NYU struggled in doubles, falling in two of three contests. First doubles team
Karina Jensrud and
Carol Plakk fell to Brandeis 8-3 and third doubles also lost (
Phoebe Su and
Lynn Robinson, 8-2). Second doubles gathered a win for the Violets, however, as
Anastasiia Balyk and
Jimena Menendez won 8-4.
In singles play, NYU scooped three wins at the first, second and third flights. In respective order, Plakk nearly swept her match 6-1, 6-0, Jensrud won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, and Menendez won a close one 6-0, 3-6, 6-4. Brandeis then came back with two wins, defeating
Emily Baxter at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-2 and Robinson 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
After three doubles matches and five singles, one Violet remained on the court after losing her first set 2-6. Su, however, fought for every ball and won the following two sets 7-5, 6-3 at fifth singles.
"I'm very proud of the effort the team put forth today. It was a typical conference match and was a battle to the end," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "It came down to Phoebe's match with the score tied 4-4. She lost the first set but dug deep and found a way to pull the match out. It was a great win for her and the team."
NYU will be back in action on Friday, April 22, when they will travel to Altamonte Springs, FL, to compete at the UAA Championships.
