Late Rally Comes Up Short for Softball on Senior Day

Violets lose 5-4 to Brandeis

New York University's softball team honored seniors Lauren Kong, Hannah Lee, Sarah Mehrle, Kalena Paredes, Brianna Roman, Erin Scott and Maggie Swan on Sunday prior to the Violets' final University Athletic Association (UAA) contest of the season against Brandeis University at the College of Staten Island.

Brandeis claimed a close, 5-4 victory as NYU fell behind early and rallied in the sixth and seventh before finishing one run short of the comeback.

The first inning was scoreless before the Judges plated two runs in the second but Swan, who started in the circle, got out of a bases-loaded jam to limit the damage.

Sophia Leon reached on a base hit in the bottom of the third and used heads-up baserunning to advance to third and eventually score on a wild pitch to put the Violets on the board.

A pair of RBI singles gave Brandeis two more runs in the top of the fourth. The fifth was scoreless, then the Judges scored another run in the top of the sixth for a 5-1 lead.

Lee ripped a one-out double to left center in the home sixth, bringing Scott to the plate in a big spot. The senior delivered, launching a towering home run off the scoreboard in the left center to bring NYU within two, 5-3.

Marina Egbert, pitching in relief of Swan, held Brandeis scoreless in the top of the seventh as NYU needed just two runs to tie the game in the final frame.

Samantha Burggraf led off the seventh with a single and Olivia de Hesselle subbed in as a pinch runner. A visitor error put the next batter on base and advanced de Hesselle to third.

Back-to-back pop outs then brought Roman to the plate with two outs and an opportunity to bring the Violets within one. She came through in the clutch on Senior Day, smacking an RBI single up the middle to make it 5-4 on the scoreboard. The rally ended there, however, in an exciting finish to conclude NYU's UAA schedule.

Swan allowed just two earned runs (four total) across five innings of work in the circle, fanning a pair along the way.

Egbert gave up just one run on one hit, a solo homer, in two innings pitched.

NYU plays its final home games of the regular season on Tuesday, April 26, welcoming Mount Saint Mary College to Staten Island for a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
