New York University's baseball team fell 13-5 to the College of Mount Saint Vincent at Maimonides Park in Brooklyn on Friday evening. The Dolphins (18-13) scored nine runs across the sixth and seventh innings to defeat NYU (18-10), despite an eighth-inning comeback attempt from the Violets' bats.
Both teams scored a single run in the first with NYU's coming on a bases-loaded walk drawn by
Nate Pallotta. The score remained 1-1 until the sixth as neither side crossed the plate in the next four frames.
A walk, error and single loaded the bases for CMSV in the sixth before the next three batters drove in a run each to make it 4-1 entering the seventh. The first three Dolphins to step up to the plate in the seventh walked to set up a six-run inning as the visitors took control late in the game.
NYU mounted a rally in the eighth as
Alex Cochrane and
Gabe LaCagnina both picked up their seconds RBIs of the season with base hits. Another run tallied on a failed pickoff attempt before
Russell Burton also drove in a run to bring the Violets within five (10-5).
However, Mount Saint Vincent plated three more in the top of the ninth to put this one out of reach.
Zane Baker went 2-for-3 as the only Violet with a multi-hit outing. Cochrane and LaCagnina both scored a run in addition to their RBIs.
Ashwin Chona got the start on the mound for NYU, going 5.1 innings while allowing four hits, four walks and just one earned run with a pair of strikeouts.
Next up for the Violets is a pair of games at Salve Regina University in Newport, RI this weekend. The teams will play single games on both Saturday and Sunday, April 23-24. First pitch tomorrow is set for 2:00 pm.
