New York University's baseball team dropped both ends of a University Athletic Association (UAA) doubleheader at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans won the opener 7-6 and took game two 7-5 in a pair of close contests. NYU fell to 17-8 and 7-8 against UAA opponents while Case Western Reserve improved to 17-15 and 8-3 in the Association.
Game One: CWRU 7, NYU 6
Zane Baker hit a two-run triple to center, scoring
Jacob Singer and
Cam Dunn, to give NYU a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. CWRU scored one in the bottom half before the Violets plated an unearned run in the third for a 3-1 edge entering inning number four.
NYU pushed across two more runs in the fourth on another RBI from Baker and a
Connor Roggero sac fly, giving the visitors a four-run lead (5-1) halfway through the game.
A four-run home fifth for CWRU tied the score at five, but the Violets jumped back ahead with a single tally in the sixth on an RBI double from
Ryan Carr.
However, the Spartans rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh which proved to be the difference as NYU was held scoreless for the final three innings of the contest.
Baker was the only Violet with multiple hits, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, a triple and a run.
Tyler Judge pitched well despite the loss, going 6.2 innings while allowing just three earned runs on 13 hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Jason Pearson and
Joseph Argenziano both had scoreless outings in relief.
Game Two: CWRU 7, NYU 5
NYU opened the scoring in game two as well after a Spartan error led to an unearned run in the top of the first.
The Violets still led 1-0 entering the bottom of the third, but Case Western Reserve plated four runs on four hits, including two doubles, to go up 4-1 entering the fourth.
NYU tacked on a run in the fourth before scoring three times in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead behind a CWRU throwing error and sac fly from
Kosta Mocklis.
The one-run advantage held until the bottom of the eighth when the Spartans scored three times, on the strength of two Violet miscues, to take a late lead. NYU went down one-two-three in the top of the ninth to end the game.
Singer, Baker,
Grant Berman,
Richard Beggy and
Joe Cetale had two hits each for NYU while Berman and Cetale both doubled.
Andrew Reid gave up four runs on seven hits and two walks while fanning four across six innings on the mound.
