New York University's baseball team used a six-run seventh inning to defeat Emory University, 6-2, on Friday afternoon in game one of a University Athletic Association (UAA) weekend series at Maimonides Park in Brooklyn.
The Violets improved to 14-1 (4-1 UAA) on the season while Emory fell to 14-12 (1-4 UAA). Sophomore pitcher
Jack Hassett (3-0) earned his third win of the season with seven strong innings on the mound.
Grant Berman,
Richard Beggy and
Connor Roggero all had multiple hits to lead NYU's offense.
How It Happened
- Hassett and Emory starter Jack Moore dueled for the first five innings with neither allowing a run and each side combining for seven hits during that span.
- The Eagles opened the scoring in the sixth, however, on a two-run homer from Steven Hunt that clanged off the scoreboard in left.
- NYU loaded the bases with one out in the seventh on a trio of walks to set the stage for its offensive outburst. Nick Argenziano drew another base-on-balls to bring in the Violets' first run, then Alex VanLandingham delivered the go-ahead single through the left side for two RBIs. Beggy followed with a two-run single of his own and Roggero also knocked in a run to complete NYU's scoring.
- John Gassler shut the door on Emory, pitching two scoreless innings of relief to complete the comeback.
For the Violets
- Berman went 2-for-3 with two runs and a pair of walks.
- Roggero was also 2-for-3 (RBI, BB, SB) while Beggy finished 2-for-4.
- Zane Baker (1-for-3, R) and Cam Dunn (1-for-2) also recorded hits for NYU.
- Hassett allowed just two runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out one in the win.
- Gassler surrendered three hits and did not allow a walk while fanning three.
