Violets Win Thriller in Extra Innings, Split Doubleheader

The Victory over Manhattanville Snapped NYU's Five-Game Losing Streak

The New York University Softball Team split a doubleheader on the road against Manhattanville College on Wednesday, March 30, in Purchase, NY.

The Violets dropped a hard-fought first game by a single run, losing 3-2.

After falling behind 4-1 in the nightcap, the Violets were able to score three unanswered runs to take the game to extra innings. After both teams scored one run in the ninth, NYU brought home eight runs in their half of the 10th inning, securing the 13-5 victory.

The win halted NYU's five-game losing streak as it enters a weekend series with University Athletic Association (UAA) opponent Carnegie Mellon University.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Manhattanville 3, NYU 2
  • NYU opened the scoring early, as Erin Scott knocked a double in the right-center gap that brought home Elisabeth Smith from second.
  • The Valiants retook the lead in the bottom half of the frame on a two-out, two-run triple to right.
  • Sophia Leon led off the third with a successful bunt and advanced to second on an errant throw to first. Kalena Paredes was able to bring her home two batters later with a single to right to even the score.
  • Manhattanville once again answered back, knocking home the winning run with a two-out single down the left field line.
  • The Violets got runners on base in the fourth and fifth innings but were unable to bring them around to score.
  • Marina Egbert (3-6) struck out 5 and allowed only two earned runs in six innings of work as the lone pitcher to take the circle for NYU.
Game Two: NYU 13, Manhattanville 5
  • Manhattanville opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer to take an early lead.
  • The Violets clawed their way back in the top of the fifth, as Lauren Kong scored after Sophia Leon reached on an error, cutting the lead to one. But the Valiants added two more runs in their half of the inning with the second two-run homer of the afternoon.
  • NYU rallied back with three runs in the sixth. Kong ripped a two-out double that scored both Scott and Lee. The next batter, Samantha Burggraf, notched a single that brought Kong home to tie the game.
  • With two outs and a runner on second in the bottom of the seventh, Manhattanville sent a single out to left field. Sophia Leon scooped up the rolling ball and sent it home, nabbing the runner just before she could touch the plate and sent the game to extra innings.
  • After a scoreless eighth, Burggraf led off the ninth inning with a double, and Leon brought her home with a two-bagger of her own to give NYU the 5-4 edge. Manhattanville was able to even up the score on a passed ball, but Maggie Swan (3-3) forced three infield pop-ups with runners on second and third to keep the game going.
  • The NYU offense erupted in the 10th, knocking in eight runs. Lee got the inning started with a bases loaded, two-run double. Kong, Paredes, and Scott all brought home runners with hard-hit singles to put the game safely out of reach.
  • Egbert returned to the mound in the bottom of the 10th, marking her first relief appearance of the season, and shut down the Manhattanville side without allowing a run.
For the Violets

Game One
  • Scott and Paredes each brought home a run as the senior duo has combined for 25 RBIs on the year. Scott is tied for 10th in the UAA with 14.
  • Senior Hannah Lee finished the first leg of the doubleheader 1-for-3 with a single. She has tallied at least one base hit in seven of the last nine games.
  • Egbert recorded her fifth complete game of the season.
Game Two
  • Swan had one of her best performances in the circle this season. The southpaw threw nine innings, striking out five, and allowing only three earned runs en route to her third win of the year.
  • Burggraf led NYU with four hits, also added two RBIs and two runs scored to her line for the evening. Scott and Kong both recorded three-hit games.
  • Leon tallied two RBIs in game two and recorded her second stolen base of the year.
