With its 8-6 win over Washington University in St. Louis to open today's doubleheader, the New York University baseball team matched its best start to a season in program history. The Violets fell 9-4 in the nightcap, but won 12 straight games to open the year for the second time ever (2018).
Following its morning victory, NYU was also the lone undefeated team across all three NCAA divisions before falling for the first time this year. The Violets took three of four contests from WashU this weekend to win their first University Athletic Association (UAA) series of 2022.
"It is so hard to win a UAA series," said Head Coach
Doug Kimbler. "I'm happy about the adjustments and the commitment of our guys."
How It Happened
Game One: NYU 8, WashU 6
- The Bears tacked on a run in the bottom of the first to open the scoring as Tim Van Kirk collected an RBI single.
- Zane Baker singled to left to bring Connor Roggero home as NYU tied the score at one in the top of the second.
- A run-scoring triple off the bat of Grant Berman highlighted a three-run third for the Violets for a 4-1 advantage.
- WashU cut its deficit to one with a pair of tallies in their half of the third, but NYU matched the Bears with two runs in the top of the fourth to stay ahead by three (6-3).
- Jack Miller hit a two-run double for the hosts in the fifth, bringing WashU back within one (6-5).
- That score held for the next inning and a half until Nate Pallotta singled to right and drove in Alex VanLandingham for an NYU insurance run.
- Both sides plated a run in the ninth, but it didn't impact the outcome as NYU came away with its 12th consecutive victory.
Game Two: WashU 9, NYU 4
- Van Kirk once again drove in the first run of the game, this time on a first-inning sacrifice fly to put the Bears up 1-0.
- An RBI single from Pallotta tied the score in the top of the second and Baker delivered in the third as NYU led 2-1 after three full.
- Ryan Carr was responsible for both Violet runs in the fourth, driving in Pallotta with a single and later scoring on a wild pitch for a 4-1 advantage.
- WashU chipped away with a run in the fourth, but took the lead for good after a five-run fifth inning behind five hits and an NYU miscue.
- The Violets were held scoreless for the remainder of the contest while the Bears added single runs in the seventh and eighth to avoid the series sweep.
