New York University's baseball team came back to win game one in extras and convincingly took the nightcap to sweep Washington University in St. Louis on the road in the teams' University Athletic Association (UAA) openers on Saturday.
The Violets (11-0, 2-0 UAA) are one win away from matching their best start to a season in program history and are one of three undefeated teams in Division III.
How It Happened
Game One: NYU 9, WashU 8 (10 innings)
- NYU starter Tyler Judge struck out the side in order in the bottom of the first, but the Bears plated two runs in both the second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead early on.
- The Violets' bats caught fire in the top of the fifth as Cam Dunn roped an RBI double and Nick Argenziano notched a two-run single through the left side with two outs to fuel a five-run frame that gave NYU the lead.
- A pair of two-out extra-base hits led to three WashU tallies in the bottom of the fifth as the hosts reclaimed the lead.
- The Bears maintained their 7-5 edge entering the top of the eighth, but NYU put across three runs on the strength of two WashU errors. Ryan Carr drove in two runs in the frame to give the Violets an 8-7 advantage late in the game.
- WashU still trailed by one as it took the plate in the bottom of the ninth. However, a one-out single put the tying run on base and an NYU throwing error advanced the runner to third. Kaden Bernhard then singled to right to tie the score and send it to extra innings.
- Carr began the top of the 10th with a bunt single and Alex VanLandingham eventually drove him in for the go-ahead run. John Gassler then held the Bears scoreless in the bottom half to secure the UAA-opening victory for NYU.
Game Two: NYU 10, WashU 3 (six innings)
- The Bears struck first in the second game after a leadoff triple and RBI groundout in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 edge.
- NYU answered with a pair of unearned scores in the top of the second due to a WashU fielding error that brought in Jacob Singer and Connor Roggero.
- The Violets broke the game open in their half of the third as Carr led off with a double to left center and Grant Berman tripled to bring him around. Argenziano and VanLandingham followed with singles and Richard Beggy capped it off with a two-run knock to give NYU a 7-1 lead.
- NYU plated a trio of insurance runs in the top of the sixth while starting pitcher Ashwin Chona allowed just three runs on five hits across a complete-game victory on the mound. The contest was called after six full innings due to darkness.
