In its return from Florida, the New York University baseball team swept a doubleheader against Lehman College with a pair of convincing victories at Maimonides Park in Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon. The Violets won game one 24-5 and took game two 12-0, both ending after five innings of play.
NYU is one of seven undefeated teams in all of Division III with a 9-0 record on the young season. The Violets are off to their second-best start in program history since becoming a Division III varsity program in 2015. NYU won 12 straight to open the 2018 campaign.
How It Happened
Game One: NYU 24, Lehman 5
- Starting pitcher Jack Hassett retired the Lightning in order in the top of the first in his lone inning of work, striking out one.
- The Violets' offense erupted in the bottom half, scoring 14 runs on just four hits as Lehman committed five errors in the frame. Cam Dunn ripped a two-run triple to right center and Ryan Carr launched a two-run homer to left to highlight the outburst.
- Lehman responded with five runs in the top of the second, largely due to six runners reaching base via walk or hit-by-pitch.
- NYU assured itself the mercy-rule victory in the bottom of the inning, plating eight more runs as Grant Berman and Zane Baker both hit two-run home runs to left and Dunn roped his second triple of the game to drive in three more.
- Five Violet pitchers combined to allow just three hits all game.
Game Two: NYU 12, Lehman 0
- Starter Tyler Judge followed Hassett's lead, sitting down Lehman one-two-three to begin game two.
- NYU's offense stayed hot, tallying five runs in the bottom of the first. Connor Roggero led off with a triple while Dunn and Russell Burton drove in two runs apiece in the frame.
- Six more scores in the second once again secured a double-digit lead for the Violets. Nick Argenziano blasted a solo shot to left and RBI doubles from Baker and Roggero padded the advantage.
- The NYU pitching staff one-hit Lehman in game two as four hurlers took the mound, allowing just three walks while fanning four.
