Florida Finale

Softball Splits on Last Day in Sunshine State

The New York University Softball Team said goodbye to Florida by splitting its final two games in the Sunshine State.

Playing in Clermont, FL, the Violets (5-8) finished their nine-game road trip with a victory over the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and a loss to Washington and Jefferson College on Saturday, March 19.

In the opener, the Violets defeated the Warhawks 8-5.

NYU led 3-1 early following RBIs from Lauren Kong and Lily Candelaria in the second inning.

After Wisconsin-Whitewater (1-2) plated four in the top of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead, the Violets pushed across a run in the bottom of the frame.

Then, in the bottom of the sixth, NYU scored four more to take the lead. Candelaria started the rally with a leadoff single. Elisabeth Smith followed with another single and, one out later, Brianna Roman's single loaded the bases. Kalena Paredes then put NYU ahead with a double. Erin Scott's single added another RBI and the Violets held on in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.

Marina Egbert (3-3) went the distance for NYU, only allowing one earned run.

The Violets raced out to a 5-0 lead vs. Washington and Jefferson (2-0), with the big blows being a two-run double by Scott in the first inning and a two-run home run by Paredes in the third.

However, the Presidents scored three in the bottom of the third and four in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-5 lead.

NYU clawed its way back with a run in the sixth on Scott's RBI single.

Still trailing by one heading into the seventh, the Violets loaded the bases with no outs on three consecutive Washington and Jefferson errors. Smith's sacrifice fly drove in the tying run, but the Violets could not grab the lead, leaving two runners stranded.

In the bottom of the frame, Olivia Dewick led off with a double for the Presidents and pinch runner Haileigh Reed eventually scored on Abbey Fullum's two-out walkoff single.

Emily Stone (0-3) took the loss in relief.

The Violets now enter University Athletic Association (UAA) play when they travel to Cleveland, OH, to face Case Western Reserve University and begin a four-game series with the Spartans on Friday, March 25.
