The New York University Softball Team opened its University Athletic Association (UAA) slate with a loss to Case Western Reserve University on Friday, March 25, in Cleveland, OH.
Playing for the first time since their nine-game Spring Break Trip in Florida, the Violets (5-9, 0-1) committed four errors and fell to the Spartans 7-4.
Case (9-6, 1-0) scored two unearned runs off of Violet starter
Marina Egbert (3-4) in the first inning.
The Violets came right back to tie the game on
Samantha Burggraf's two-run double in the top of the second. But, the Spartans plated a run in the bottom of the frame and three more in the third inning to take a commanding 6-2 lead.
The Violets added single runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Brian Roman and in the seventh on a Spartan error, but it was not enough to avoid the loss.
Lauren Kong and
Erin Scott each had two hits for the Violets.
The teams were expected to play a doubleheader on Friday, but the second game was postponed due to rain.
The teams will meet again in Cleveland on Saturday for a scheduled doubleheader beginning at 1:00pm.
