Men's Hoops Upsets #24 CWRU on the Road

Violets Earn First UAA Win

The New York University Men's Basketball Team earned a statement win on Friday, February 11, upsetting #24-ranked Case Western Reserve University, 77-70, on the road in Cleveland, OH.

The Violets (11-9, 1-8) secured their first victory in University Athletic Association (UAA) play this season and notched back-to-back wins after Monday's triumph at Moravian University.

NYU came out strong in this one, quickly going up 7-0 in the first few minutes. Case Western Reserve (16-4, 6-3) stormed back with a 15-0 run to pull ahead 15-7 with 13:39 on the clock.

The rest of the first half was highly contested with many lead changes throughout as the Violets entered the break leading 37-32.

The second half stayed tight, but eight minutes in the Violets pulled out to an 11-point lead, their biggest of the night, on a three-pointer from Nick Macarchuk. From that point on NYU never trailed, but the Spartans kept things close until the final buzzer.

Zay Freeney went on to ice the game with 12 seconds to go, converting on both his free throws to give the Violets a seven-point lead and finish the upset with a 77-70 victory.

After the game, Head Coach Dagan Nelson praised his teams progress.

"Our program took a big step forward tonight," he said. "We responded to every run CWRU threw at us and made timely shots. It doesn't hurt to have #5 (Bobby Hawkinson) on our side either."
