Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Hoops Tops CMU for Third Straight Win

Violets Never Trail in Pittsburgh

Make it back-to-back University Athletic Association (UAA) victories, and three straight overall, for New York University's Men's Basketball Team as the Violets picked up a wire-to-wire, 77-51 win over Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday, February 13, in Pittsburgh, PA.

The triumph comes after NYU's upset victory over #24 Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland on Friday as the Violets swept a road UAA weekend for the first time since February 2016.

"We played a full 40 minutes today," said Head Coach Dagan Nelson. "I'm proud of our program, our commitment to executing our defensive coverages was outstanding. We look forward to building off this weekend."

NYU carried Friday's momentum right into this one as the visitors quickly established a 17-2 lead, holding CMU to 1-of-12 field-goal shooting over the opening eight-and-a-half minutes.

The Tartans climbed back within single digits (24-15) at the 8:31 mark of the first, but NYU responded with a 9-1 run to pull ahead by 17. NYU shot 51.7 percent from the floor in the first half and an impressive 7-of-11 from deep, leading to a 39-22 advantage at intermission.

NYU's cushion grew to 29, its largest lead of the game, on a Nikola Lipovic trifecta with 7:58 to play as CMU never came back within 20 points and 10 Violets scored in a convincing road victory.

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN
  • Senior captain Bobby Hawkinson continued his stellar play, finishing with a 22-point, 15-rebound double-double on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor. He added three assists and a block to go with his 16th double-double of the year and fourth straight.
  • Zay Freeney had an all-around game, totaling nine points on 3-of-6 long-range shooting as well as four assists, four boards and a pair of blocks.
  • Alex Maticiuc contributed eight points off the bench alongside four rebounds and a block.
  • Cinque Stephens chipped in seven points, four dimes, two boards and two blocks.
  • NYU protected the paint all game, recording a season-high nine blocks.
