The start was pretty good, but the end definitely was not.
The New York University men's soccer team led 1-0, but could not hold the advantage in dropping its University Athletic Association (UAA) home opener 2-1 to Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, October 8, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
The Violets'
Bryce Lexow opened the scoring when he connected on a penalty kick at 34:45 after being taken down inside the box.
The 1-0 lead held up through the first half as the NYU defense was oppressive, allowing Case only one shot which was saved by Violet keeper
Luca Mancuso. The Violets out-shot the Spartans 7-1 in the opening half, with four landing on net.
However, the second half was a different story as Matt Vatne's penalty kick at 53:22 knotted the score at 1-1.
The game remained deadlocked until there were less than two minutes remaining. At the 88:19 mark, Kysen Kroeger took a cross pass from Vatne and buried the game-winner.
The Violets, who did not get off a shot in the second half, are now 5-4-1 and 1-1 in the UAA, while the Spartans remain undefeated (2-0) in UAA play and are 6-2-2 overall.
The Violets return to the pitch on Friday, October 14, when they face UAA-opponent Emory University at 5:00pm in Atlanta, GA.
