Tahsildaroglu's Last-Minute Goal Lifts Violets Over Emory

NYU now above .500 (2-1) in UAA play

The New York University men's soccer team came back to defeat Emory University, 3-2, at the last minute in Atlanta, GA, on Friday night.

The Violets improved to 6-4-1 overall and 2-1 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play with the win.

Emory's Alex Mills scored the first goal of the game in the 19th minute, sending an arc from the left side that just managed to bounce into the net after Violet goalie Luca Manusco's fingertips grazed the ball.

Manusco bounced back by saving Joe Beare's shot in the 26th minute. Despite this, the Eagles' defense proved tough to break in the first half with NYU taking just two shots to Emory's four.

After the break, Arkan Tahsildaroglu set a new tone for the Violets with a shot just one-and-a-half minutes after the game resumed. His attempt veered left of the net but built momentum for NYU's offense.

In the 60th minute, Terra Nagai finally managed to find the back of the net for the equalizing goal with a header assisted by Tahsildaroglu.

The Violets continued their attacking pressure, firing two more shots within just a minute of Nagai's goal.

At 64:16, Joe Leslie scored on another assist by Tahsildaroglu to establish a 2-1 lead over the Eagles.

However, Emory's Zach Kornblum equalized the match once again with a goal in the 67th minute.

From there, Tahsildaroglu led the Violets in a more aggressive push to take the lead again, firing off four shots in six minutes.

Manusco saved three shots by the Eagles during that span to help keep the score knotted.

The intensity of the match shot up in the last ten minutes with NYU's fourth yellow card on Tahsildaroglu and an immediate red card to Emory's Matthew Tanzer.

Then, in the last minute just seconds before the final whistle blew, Tahsildaroglu's efforts paid off. Emory keeper Peter Wagner blocked a free kick by Alex Rovirosa-Illa, but Tahsildaroglu was in the right place at the right time, sending the rebound into the top right corner of the net for the game winner.

It was Tahsildaroglu's fifth goal of the year while the two assists were his fifth and sixth, also recording season highs of nine shots and five shots on goal.

The Violets led 20-9 in shots and Mancuso finished the night with five saves.

NYU returns to the pitch for another UAA battle on Sunday, October 16, at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY, at 11 a.m.
