Women's Soccer Draws at #8 CMU to Begin UAA Play

Keady scores again as Violets remain undefeated

Kelli Keady scored her third goal in the last two games as New York University's women's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw at eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday to begin the 2022 University Athletic Association (UAA) schedule.

Rainy conditions were afoot in Pittsburgh but didn't deter the teams' offense as both sides combined for 26 shots in a closely-contested battle.

The draw was NYU's fifth of the season, bringing its record to 4-0-5 (0-0-1 UAA) to remain undefeated.

Carnegie Mellon had the first chance of the match in the fourth minute when Alex Adams picked off a pass to set up a one-on-one with Violet keeper Tyler Hawkins. Hawkins was up to the challenge, charging forward to make a kick stop just inside of the box.

Keady finished a chance of her own two minutes later, taking a pass from Jayla Lee on the left side of the box before drilling a shot to the near post past the diving keeper. It was Keady's sixth goal of the year and the first of her career in UAA play.

Lee found the back of the net herself just one minute later, lofting a ball into the box that bounced over the CMU keeper who lost her footing in the slippery conditions.

The Tartans responded in the 16th minute, however, as Adams scored this time on an assist from Jenna Hallbeck to cut NYU's lead in half.

The Violets' 2-1 edge held at intermission due to Hawkins making another diving save on a one-on-one breakaway just before the end of the first half.

Carnegie Mellon then found the equalizer in the 62nd when Adams netted her second goal of the day off of a rebound in the box.

NYU had a couple of opportunities to regain the lead late in the match, as Keady's shot in the 68th minute had some zip on it but Tartan keeper Olivia Brand made an impressive stop.

Dominique Bevacqua had a breakaway of her own with less than three minutes to play, but Brand stepped up again with a diving save to keep the score tied.

Both keepers had strong outings as Hawkins finished with a career-high eight saves.

The draw brought Carnegie Mellon's record to 6-1-2 as the Violets snapped a streak of four losses in their last five meetings with the Tartans.

Next up for NYU is a return home as the team reverts back to non-Association play, hosting Stockton University on the campus of NJIT in Newark, NJ, on Wednesday, October 5, at 7:00 p.m.
