New York University's
#4-ranked Women's Basketball Team mounted a big fourth-quarter comeback to defeat the University of Chicago, 72-64, in a University Athletic Association (UAA) matchup on Sunday, January 23 in Chicago, IL.
The Violets, who remain undefeated in 2021-22 (14-0, 5-0), are off to their best start to a season since 2014-15 when the team won 15-straight to start the year.
NYU put up the first six points of the game, but Chicago outscored the Violets 8-4 over the final five minutes of the first for a 16-14 edge after one.
The Violets regained the lead (18-16) at the 7:35 mark of the second when
Jordan Janowski (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Saddle River Day School) nabbed a steal and found
Mary Kate Fahey (Arlington Heights, IL/John Hersey) for a finish on the break.
NYU held the Maroons to 3-of-10 shooting in the second and held a 26-25 halftime advantage.
Chicago responded after intermission, hitting four of their seven long-range jumpers in the third. The hosts outscored NYU 24-18 in the quarter to take a 49-44 lead entering the final frame.
The Violets fought back in the fourth, opening the period with a 10-2 spurt to jump back on top, 54-51, after a
Natalie Bruns (St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood) bucket. NYU continued to roll, winning the quarter by 13 points (28-15). Aggressive play defined the comeback as the Violets got to the line consistently in the fourth, shooting 12-of-16 from the stripe to secure the win.
Belle Pellecchia (Randolph, NJ/Rutgers Prepatory) stayed hot, scoring 17 points (5-of-9 FG, 7-of-8 FT) along with seven rebounds and three steals.
Bruns scored 17 as well, shooting 6-of-11 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the line while pulling down five boards.
Junior captain
Jenny Walker (Sausalito, CA/Redwood) grinded out a double-double, finishing with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Janowski was the fourth Violet in double-figures, adding 11 points (7-of-9 FT), four rebounds, an assist and a steal.
