New York University's Women's Basketball Team is still undefeated and has won three-straight University Athletic Association (UAA) contests by at least 17 points.
The
#4-ranked Violets' (13-0, 4-0) latest installment in their still-undefeated 2021-22 campaign was an 85-68 win over Washington University in St. Louis on Friday, January 21 in St. Louis, MO.
Junior
Jenny Walker (Sausalito, CA/Redwood) and freshman
Belle Pellecchia (Randolph, NJ/Rutgers Prepatory) combined for 49 points in the win as Walker poured in a career-high 26 (8-of-12 FG, 10-of-12 FT) and Pellecchia dropped 23 (4-of-7 FG, 15-of-17 FT) as NYU ran away from the Bears (8-7, 2-2) in the second half.
Pellecchia opened the game with an and-one on a fastbreak, giving NYU the first points of the contest. WashU kept it close throughout the first quarter, though, as neither team scored during the final 2:17 of the frame with NYU leading 21-19 after one.
The Violets' defense made the difference in the second, limiting WashU to just 1-of-15 shooting in the period. NYU outscored the Bears 15-9 in quarter number two and held a 36-28 halftime advantage.
Another inefficient shooting quarter for the Bears in the third allowed NYU to pull away even further, holding WashU to a 3-of-11 clip. NYU made 7-of-9 free throws in the third, outscoring the Bears 17-11 for a double-digit lead entering the fourth.
NYU lured the Bears into a bevy of fouls in the fourth, using plentiful free-throw shooting to close this one out. The Violets attempted a whopping 28 free-throws in the final quarter, sinking 22, to secure their 13th victory in as many games.
Walker also pulled down 11 boards, giving her a double-double, and protected the paint all night with three blocks. Pellecchia did a little bit of everything on top of her season-best scoring night, adding six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Jordan Janowski (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Saddle River Day School) tallied 14 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals as she continued to play well in her debut season.
Fellow rookie
Natalie Bruns (St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood) had a double-double of her own with 12 points, 11 boards, three blocks and two assists.
The Violets continue the UAA gauntlet on Sunday, January 23 when they take on the University of Chicago at 2 pm (central) in Chicago, IL.
