NYU Intramurals welcomed eGaming back to the programming calendar on December 4th, 2021, hosting a Super Smash Bros tournament at the Palladium Athletic Facility.
Unlike what had become normal during the pandemic, the tournament focused on providing an in-person experience, with the NYU gaming community acknowledging the need. Over 64 individuals participated (with many more on a waitlist for future events) in competitive group play throughout the grueling day-long. The tournament did not disappoint at all, with upsets, big wins, comeback stories, but ultimately, a much-wanted (and needed) rebuilt community.
At the end of it all, Taiyo Baniecki outlasted the field, including the impressive winners of each of the 16 pools, and won the entire event. Also of note, was Colin McCrae, who captured everyone with his journey of a first round loss, just to upset multiple favorites on his way to the grand finale before falling to Baniecki.
Intramural e-Gaming Student-Supervisor, Benny He, was very pleased with the first event, and is already working on multiple events for the Spring semester and beyond. "The event ran extremely well. I was really happy people were given a chance to meet and hang out and exchange contact info and talk in real life."
"NYU Intramurals ended with a bang", followed up, Intramural Director,
EJ Mitchem. "We are at the start of something big. Look out, Violets."
Look for all of the offerings from NYU Intramurals in the coming weeks, with plenty of eGaming opportunities planned.
