Wrestling Goes Undefeated at Roger Williams Duals

NYU Wins Three Matchups, Finishes in First Place

The New York University Wrestling Team won all three of its matchups and finished in first place at the Roger Williams Duals, hosted by Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI, on Saturday, December 4.

NYU defeated Rhode Island College 37-6, Navy Prep 39-7 and host Roger Williams 28-12.

Izaake Zuckerman (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) and Jason Geyer (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) both went a perfect 3-0 on the day.

"This was our first team dual competition in quite a while and you could tell the team was excited to step on the mat today," Assistant Coach Anthony Dattolo said.

In the first match of the day, Nick Kruczynski (Natick, MA/Natick), Costa Moore (Canonsburg, PA/Canon McMillan) and Anthony Chavez (Fresno, CA/Central East) won their bouts by decision to give NYU a 9-3 lead. After Rhode Island forfeited four matchups, David Aranda (Huntington Beach, CA/St. John Bosco) won by major decision

Against Navy Prep, Chavez, Cooper Pontelandolfo (Marlton, NJ/Kingsway Regional) and Benny Bautista (Montvale, NJ/Paramus Catholic) all won by decision.

Roger Williams had won their first two matchups of the day, defeating Johnson & Wales University 36-15 and New England College 39-7, but NYU won six of 10 bouts against the host Hawks.

Tyler Crew (St. Marys, GA/Camden County) opened the match with a pin, but Roger Williams took the next three bouts. Trent Furman (Washington Township, NJ/Westwood Regional) gave NYU back the lead with another pin to go up 12-9. A major decision win by Pontelandolfo, a pin by Jason Geyer (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley), and wins by decision from Zuckerman and Scott DuPont (Holmdel. NJ/Holmdel) locked in the third win of the day.

"From the first match to the last, everyone wrestled with a lot of fight and determination," Datollo added.

Geyer (174) is ranked #11 nationally in the most recent NWCA (National Wrestling Coaches Association) Poll, and Pontelandolfo is ranked #12 at 165-pounds.

Crew (#2, 125), Pontelandolfo (#2, 165), Aranda (#3, 285), Chavez (#4, 149), Furman (#4, 157), and Geyer (#3, 174) are all ranked in the NWCA Regional Coaches Poll.

NYU returns to the mat tomorrow, December 5, at the Bob Quade Centenary Open, hosted by Centenary University in Hackettstown, NJ.
