The New York University Wrestling Team traveled to Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI, for a pair of duals on Saturday, December 11, improving to 4-1 in dual matches on the young season.
NYU took on the host Wildcats and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, splitting the trip with a 44-3 victory over WPI and a hard-fought, 18-16 defeat to Johnson & Wales.
The day started against WPI with NYU dominating from start to finish, winning all but one of the 10 bouts.
Anthony Chavez (Fresno, CA/Central East) and
Trent Furman (Washington Township, NJ/Westwood Regional) notched technical falls while
Cooper Pontelandolfo (Marlton, NJ/Kingsway Regional),
Jason Geyer (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) and
Izaake Zuckerman (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) all won via fall.
NYU carried this momentum into the matchup versus Johnson & Wales, as
Nick Kruczynski (Natick, MA/Natick) delivered an overtime win to open the dual, putting NYU ahead 3-0.
The Wildcats won the next bout but Chavez followed with a gritty 5-4 win to put NYU back on top, 6-3. Furman and Pontelandolfo were also victorious, helping NYU to a 13-3 lead and a strong start.
JWU stormed back, however, winning consecutive matchups to pull ahead.
Tyler Crew (St. Marys, GA/Camden County) finished strong for NYU though, dominating his 125 bout for a 7-0 victory.
This was NYU's final action of 2021 as they continue the season on January 8, 2022 at the Maganaro Duals, hosted by Ursinus College in Collegevile, PA.
