Playing their final non-conference game of the season, New York University's Men's Soccer Team fell in stunning fashion, 2-1, to the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday, October 12, at Gaelic Park.
The Violets, ranked
No. 7 in the country, held a 1-0 lead at halftime, but a pair of second-half tallies from Ian Lamas gave the Dolphins (8-1-2) a comeback victory.
NYU (8-2-1) opened the scoring in just the 10th minute of play when
Arkan Tahsildaroglu (Istanbul, Turkey/Berkshire School (MA)) sent a cross from the left side that found
Nathan Bennett (Wilton, CT/Wilton) who fired it into the bottom right corner of the net from 10 yards out.
It was Bennett's seventh goal of the season as the rookie has now scored in three-straight games.
The Violets out-shot CMSV 9-3 in the first and led 7-2 in corner kicks, but the Dolphins were not deterred, coming out of the break with increased aggressiveness.
Even still, New York maintained a 10-4 advantage in shots over the final 45 minutes. However, Mount Saint Vincent found the equalizer in the 80th minute as Santiago Ferrer sent a bounding kick down the middle of the field. Lamas tracked it down and tapped a high chip shot over NYU keeper
Nick Vafiadis (Englewood, NJ/Bergen Catholic) that trickled into the net.
Similar fate awaited NYU's defense just three minutes later when Lamas pushed ahead on a breakaway and sent a long chip shot from 30 yards out over a charging Vafiadis that once again bounded into the nylon.
Nicholas Suter (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor) had a quality chance in the final minute of play on a header off of a free kick, but it was saved by CMSV netminder Erick Pantoja.
Tahsildaroglu led the Violets' attack with nine shots (six on goal) but could not crack the Dolphins' defense.
NYU reverts back to University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Friday, October 15, when they travel to St. Louis, MO, to take on Washington University. Kickoff is set for 8:00 pm central time.
