The New York University softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against host University of Scranton on Sunday, March 8, in Scranton, PA.
The Violets (2-4) dropped the first game of the doubleheader 9-1 and fell short in game two by a score of 9-5.
NYU scored the first run of the first game in the first inning after
Samantha Sicignano (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville) led off with a double and was later driven in by
Caroline Saccacio (Huntington Beach, CA/Huntington Beach).
The lead was short-lived, however, as the Royals (2-0) scored four in the third and and five in the fourth. NYU starter
Maggie Swan (Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon) was charged with all nine runs over her 3.2 innings, but only one was earned as the Violets committed four errors in the contest.
Morgan Clemens (Califon, NJ/Voorhees) was the only other NYU player to get a hit in the opener.
Game two did not start well for the Violets, as Scranton scored five runs in the first inning and three in the second off NYU starter
Eryn Onodera (Cypress, CA/Pacifica). Swan came in from the pen and only allowed one unearned run over her three innings of relief as the Violets mounted a comeback.
Mary Tindall (Houston, TX/M.B. Lamar) got NYU on the scoreboard with a second-inning RBI single.
Then, in the top of the third, NYU exploded for four runs to cut its deficit to 8-5. Karen Paredes laced an RBI single, Tindall drove in another run with a groundout and Clemens added a two-RBI single.
However, despite
Callie Kramsky (Marlboro, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) adding two innings of shutout relief, the Violets did score again as they suffered their third straight defeat.
The Violets will be back on the diamond this Tuesday, March 10, for a doubleheader against Rutgers University-Newark in Newark, NJ, beginning at 4:00pm.
