Despite the 2020 New York University baseball season being cut short due to the coronavirus epidemic, the team produced several highlights during the limited campaign.
The Violets finished the season with a 4-1 record, securing victories over John Jay College (11-0), Roger Williams University (6-2), and a pair of wins over Stockton University (12-1,12-10).
"It will be hard to accept that we will not be able to find out how this team would have done," said Head Coach
Doug Kimbler. "Especially knowing that they prepared so hard and were ready for the grind of a collegiate baseball season. It's tough."
The team received recognition early on in the season with senior
Coltrane Tait (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill) earning University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week honors on March 9. Tait had a strong offensive performance in the team's sweep of Stockton, going 4-for-9 overall. He drove in seven runs, scored three times, stroked three doubles, walked once, and hit a sacrifice fly.
Sophomore
Grant Berman (Encino, CA/Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks)) also received UAA Athlete of the Week accolades on March 16 after he went 2-for-3 with four RBIs as the designated hitter in the Violets' win over John Jay.
"Our team was very excited about the work ahead," added Kimbler. "This team concerned itself with the temperature (environment) of the program every single day and always put team first."
Berman ended the season as the team leader in batting average (.444), hits (8), runs (9), total bases (13), and on-base percentage (.565).
"Grant is maturing as a baseball player on and off the field," said Kimbler. "He has made a huge jump to becoming a leader of this team."
On the mound,
Gabriel Golob led the Violets with two wins. He recorded 23 strikeouts while only allowing eight hits in 14.2 innings of work.
"Gabe took his off-season very seriously," Kimbler revealed. "He developed different goals and really did everything to reach them."
In addition to Tait, the other Violet seniors who may have played their final games for NYU include pitchers
Sal Cammisuli,
Zach Cohen (Corte Madera, CA/Redwood),
Jake Kubiliun (Miami, FL/NSU University School), and
Ford Ladd (Longmont, CO/Niwot), catcher
Matthew Bruno (Tampa, FL/Berkeley Prep), and outfielder
Grant Otto (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Delbarton).
"These guys have all helped with the rise of our baseball program," Kimbler explained. "If they have played their final games for us, they have left the program better off than when they arrived."
