Two Violets Earn Medals

Official Results

The New York University men's track & field team finished in fifth place at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Championships, which the Violets hosted on Saturday and Sunday, February 29-March 1, at the Armory in Manhattan.

The Violets ended up with 59 points, just one behind fourth-place Brandeis University. Washington University in St. Louis won the seven-team meet with 201 points.

A pair of Violets reached the podium and earned six points each with their third-place finishes on Sunday. Ben Karam (New York, NY/Xavier) took the bronze medal in the mile (4:14.95) and Owen Mountford (Mountain View, CA/Mountain View ) did likewise in the shot put (14.22m).

Kamden Martin (Canonsburg, PA/Canon McMillan) collected points for NYU with fourth-place finishes in the 60-meter dash (7.10) and 200m (22.50). Julian Montilus (Mendham, NJ/West Morris Mendham) also recorded a fourth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles.

Jon Diaz (Brookline, MA/Brookline) posted a sixth-place finish in the 800m (1:56.18). Daniel Akande (Franklin Township, NJ/Franklin Township) was seventh in the 400m (51.71), as was the Violets' 4x400m relay team (3:24.24).

Eighth-place finishes were produced by Benjamin Heintz (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) in the mile (4:20.25) and by Brian Kaiserman (Las Vegas, NV/Faith Lutheran) in the 200m (22.97).

"We were able to score points in many different events, which helped our overall total," explained Head Coach Erison Hurtault. "We also missed out on points that would have gotten us higher in the standings."

The Violets' indoor season continues next Friday and Saturday, March 6-7, at the All-Atlantic Region Indoor Championships in Rochester, NY, for those competitors who have met the qualifying standards (PDF)
