The New York University wrestling team, ranked #9 in the nation by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), recorded two victories and one loss on Saturday, February 8.
Competing at a quad meet hosted by the United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) in New London, CT, the squad defeated Bridgewater State University (40-12) and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) (33-9) before being edged by the hosts (19-18) in the final match.
In the first match against Bridgewater State, NYU won eight out of 10 bouts. In the opening bout of the tournament,
Tyler Crew (St. Marys, GA/Camden County) recorded a technical fall, setting the tone for the rest of the match.
Trent Furman (Washington Township, NJ/Westwood Regional) and
Zach Alexander (North Andover, MA/St. John's Prep) both followed up with major decisions, which paved the way to NYU's dominant victory.
The squad's second match against WPI also resulted in a decisive victory. Furman and
Quinn Dailey (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) both recorded decisions, while
Evan Drill (Neshanic Station, NJ/Somerville) posted a dominant major decision. But the real story of the match came as a result of
Sean Lyons (Sewell, NJ/St. Joseph's Prep) recording a major decision. The senior captain, weighing in at 157 pounds, posted the 100th win of his outstanding four-year career.
"I am very happy for Sean. He works very hard in practice and his success is a reflection of his work ethic," said Senior Assistant Coach
Corey Luce. "Not only did he get three wins today, but was dominant in every aspect."
Victories were also posted by
Izaake Zuckerman (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) (6-1 decision) and William Ortman (fall 4-2).
NYU dropped its final match against #17-ranked USCGA in an extremely tight match. NYU got off to a great start, winning its first five bouts, but could not hold on down the stretch. Victories were posted by Crew, Furman, Dailey, Drill, and Lyons before USCGA took control of the match.
"Losing to Coast Guard overshadowed the other two wins," said Luce. "Hats off to them. They were down 18-0 after five bouts and we let it slip away."
NYU returns to the mat at home on next Saturday, February 15, to host the annual University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility. First match is set for 11:00 am.
