Women’s Basketball Kicks-off Weekend with Win

Violets Defeat Carnegie Mellon 69-60

The New York University women's basketball team posted a 69-60 University Athletic Association (UAA) road victory over Carnegie Mellon University on Friday, February 7, in Pittsburgh, PA.

The Violets (15-4, 5-3) jumped out to an early 17-8 lead, but a 9-0 run from the host Tartans (12-7, 2-6) tied things up at 17 all to end the first quarter.

NYU struck first in the second quarter off of a Jenny Walker (Sausalito, CA/Redwood) jumper, followed by a Brooklyn Shelton (Botetourt, VA/Lord Botetourt) layup to take the lead, 21-17.

The Violets led 37-34 at halftime with Walker totaling 10 points and seven rebounds.

CMU took its first lead of the game in the third quarter, 45-43, after Laurel Perieria hit a baseline layup. But, the Violets were able to re-take the lead, 52-50, thanks to an Annie Barrett (Cambridge, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) floater to end the third quarter.

Katie Foos (Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) opened up the fourth with a long three-ball to give the Violets a five-point lead, 55-50. They outscored their opponents 14-10 the rest of the way to secure the victory.

"Meghan McLaughlin (Mount Laurel, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep) is winning games for us with her defense even if it's not seen in the stats," said Head Coach Meg Barber. "She had a key block down the stretch which was huge for us."

Walker recorded a double-double and led all scorers with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Shelton finished with 11 points.

"Jenny was just a monster tonight," added Barber. "Brooklyn and Jenny kept their composure tonight and really stepped up to play an excellent game on the road."

Makayla Filiere led Carnegie Mellon with 17 points.

The Violets now head to Cleveland, OH, for a game against Case Western Reserve University on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 2:00pm.
