Women's Basketball Victorious in Ohio

Violets Defeat Spartans 64-55

The New York University women's basketball team defeated Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) 64-55 in a University Athletic Association (UAA) game on Sunday, February 9, in Cleveland, OH.

The victory moved NYU into a three-way tie for first place in the UAA standings. Chicago, Emory and the Violets all sit at 6-3 in conference play.

The Spartans (10-10, 5-4) and Violets (16-4, 6-3) were evenly matched through the first 10 minutes of action, trading two-point advantages back and forth. The squads eventually tied things up at 16 to end the first quarter.

NYU struck first in the second quarter off of a Brooklyn Shelton (Botetourt, VA/Lord Botetourt) three-pointer to take the lead, 19-16. But CWRU scored the next nine and eventually led 30-26 at halftime.

Jenny Walker (Sausalito, CA/Redwood) opened up the third quarter with back-to-back jumpers to bring the Violets within two, 32-30. Janean Cuffee (New York, NY/The Lawrenceville School) followed that up with a three-pointer to put the Violets ahead, 33-32. But, CWRU battled back and led 45-44 at the end of the third.

In the fourth quarter, NYU went on a 13-3 run highlighted by a pair of three-point plays by Cuffee and Walker, to take its biggest lead of the game 57-47. With 5:11 left to play, CWRU pulled within three, 57-54.

However, that's as close as the Spartans would get as NYU held on for the victory.

Cuffee finished with a game-high 20 points, while adding seven rebounds and four assists. Walker scored 15 points while Shelton (Botetourt, VA/Lord Botetourt) contributed 12.

Meghan McLaughlin (Mount Laurel, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

"Honestly, I just thought it was all about finding our inside-out game," said Head Coach Meg Barber. "We shot terribly today, but that wasn't the focus of our game."

Melissa Heath led the way for Case Western with 15 points.

"We won the game with our defense," explained Barber. "Jenny was outstanding on the low block for us and she was really able to find her teammates on kick-outs today."

The Violets return to UAA action on Friday, February 14, when they travel to Atlanta, GA, to face Emory University. Tip-off is set for 6:00pm
