Softball Team Completes Weekend Action

Violets Split Doubleheader

The New York University softball team closed out its weekend with games against Drew University and host Kean College on Sunday, February 23, in Union, NJ.

The Violets opened with a 9-4 victory over Drew in the first game and then were beaten 8-0 by host Kean in the nitecap.

After Drew drew first blood in the opener with a first-inning run, the Violets came right back in the bottom of the frame with two of their own. Samantha Sicignano and Caroline Saccacio (Huntington Beach, CA/Huntington Beach) each had hits and came around to score on a fielding error.

The Violets plated three more runs in the third on RBI singles from Rachel Colbus (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's School for Girls), Mary Tindall (Houston, TX/M.B. Lamar) and starting pitcher Maggie Swan (Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon). Colbus added another RBI single in the fourth and smacked a three-run home run in the sixth to seal the victory for NYU.

Overall, Colbus went 3-for-4 in the game, recording five RBIs and scoring twice. Caroline Saccacio (Huntington Beach, CA/Huntington Beach) added two hits.

Swan went seven innings for the Violets, striking out seven. She allowed one run on seven hits.

The victory was the 100th for NYU since starting the Division III program in 2015.

The Violets (2-2) were three-hit in the second game, as Saccacio and Serena Ponciano (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) had singles and Morgan Clemens (Califon, NJ/Voorhees) smacked a double.

Swan started again and lasted four inning, allowing four earned runs and striking out four. She started all four games over the weekend and now has a 4-4 record.

"It was a busy opening weekend," said Head Coach Now-Allah James. "We're learning about who we are and what we need to do to get better every day."

The Violets return to action on Saturday, February 29, for a doubleheader hosted by The College of New Jersey. NYU will face both FDU-Florham and host TCNJ.
