The New York University women's basketball team maintained its first-place standing in the University Athletic Association (UAA) with a 73-47 win over the University of Rochester on Sunday, February 16, in Rochester NY.
The Violets (18-4, 8-3) entered the day tied atop the standings with the University of Chicago, who defeated Case Western Reserve University on Sunday.
Rochester (10-12, 4-7) scored the first five points of the contest, but NYU was able to score the next five and keep things leveled with 7:21 left on the clock. The squads traded one-point advantages, but NYU went on to lead 18-17 after the first quarter.
Things picked up for the Violets in the second quarter as they nearly doubled their scoring outing, putting up 27 points and heading into the intermission with a 45-28 lead. NYU had led by only one point before ending the half on a 20-6 run to create the double-digit lead.
The Violets' lead increased in the third quarter and they led 58-36 heading into the fourth.
NYU didn't slow down in the final quarter, shooting 53.8% (7-for 13) from the field while Rochester only shot 29.4% (5-for-17) over the final 10 minutes.
"That was by far the most complete game of the season for us," said Head Coach
Meg Barber. "We came out strong defensively and our focus today was to sustain that intensity for 40 minutes, and we did."
NYU's win over Rochester was its fourth straight and sixth in the team's last seven games.
Janean Cuffee (New York, NY/The Lawrenceville School) led four Violets in double-digits with 16 points. She was followed by
Alyssa Alvarez (Daly City, CA/Convent of the Sacred Heart) (13),
Annie Barrett (Cambridge, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) (12) and
Katie Foos (Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) (11). Barrett also had a game-high eight assists. She, along with Foos and
Lauren Gast (St. Louis, MO/Villa Duchesne) each collected a team-high six rebounds.
"We had Annie looking to distribute the ball and score on offense," added Barber. " We also had
Lauren Gast (St. Louis, MO/Villa Duchesne) on the floor who gave us huge minutes in the paint."
The Violets return to action for a first-place battle with Chicago on Friday, February 21. NYU will host the Maroons at Pace University in Pleasantville, NY, with tip-off set for 6:00pm.
