Women's Basketball Drops UAA Contest

Violets Fall to Chicago

The New York University women's basketball team was defeated by the University of Chicago 78-62 in a University Athletic Association (UAA) game on Friday, February 21.

 NYU (18-5, 8-4) hosted the game at Pace University in Pleasantville, NY.

The Maroons (18-5, 9-3) took a quick 7-2 lead, but the Violets scored the next eight points for a 10-7 lead. The advantage expanded to seven points, 19-12, on the second of Katie Foos' (Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) consecutive three-pointers with 2:32 to go.

Chicago cut into its deficit, but Annie Barrett's (Cambridge, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) layup in the final minute gave NYU a 21-16 lead after the first quarter. 

The Maroons scored the first nine points of the second quarter before another Barrett layup finally ended the streak. 

Chicago's lead grew to as many as eight points, 33-25. But, NYU scored the next six and pulled within 38-36 at halftime.

Janean Cuffee (New York, NY/The Lawrenceville School) led the Violets at the break with 12 points, while Foos had nine. 

The Maroons scored the first six points of the second half to take another eight-point lead, then increased it to 13 points on several occasions.

NYU twice pulled within seven, but sill trailed by nine, 63-54, at the end of the third quarter. 

The Violets never got any closer in the final quarter, as they did not score until Foos hit a layup with 4:20 left in the game. The Maroons increased their lead to as many as 17 points en route to the 16-point victory.

NYU was bogged down by turnovers throughout the contest, committing 23. 

Foos led NYU with 16 points. Cuffee had 15 and Lauren Koyama (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto) finished with 13.

Annie Barrett (Cambridge, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) recorded a career-high and UAA -record 13 assists. Jenny Walker (Sausalito, CA/Redwood) led the Violets with seven rebounds.

Taylor Lake led four Maroons in double digits with a game-high 21 points.

"We were out-matched today," Head Coach Meg Barber admitted. "But, we have another big game on Sunday so we just have to get ready for that." 

The Violets return to the Sportsplex in Manhattan for their final home game of the season on Sunday, February 23. NYU will host Washington University in St, Louis on Senior Day, with tip-off scheduled for 2:00pm.
