The New York University women's basketball team posted a 81-77 University Athletic Association (UAA) road victory over Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday, January 28, in St. Louis, MO.
The Violets (13-3, 3-2) trailed by a point early in the game, but a 10-0 run gave them their biggest lead of the first half, 16-7.
NYU held on to a 23-18 lead after the first quarter, and after falling behind momentarily in the second, was ahead 39-33 at halftime.
The Violets continued to stay ahead throughout the third quarter and led by eight, 56-48, heading into the fourth.
The Bears (8-8, 1-4) pulled within two, 59-57. But,
Katie Foos (Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) hit consecutive three-pointers and
Brooklyn Shelton (Botetourt, VA/Lord Botetourt) hit a jumper to re-establish a nine-point lead, 67-58, with 4:35 remaining.
The NYU lead increased to 12 points several times in the final minutes, as Shelton (4) and
Annie Barrett (Cambridge, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) (6) each made free throws without a miss.
The Bears' two three-pointers in the final 20 seconds closed them to within four points just before the final buzzer.
"We played tough. Very resilient," said Head Coach
Meg Barber. "Any road win in the UAA is huge. We got contributions from everyone on the roster today, so it's a lot of fun."
Barrett, who played all 40 minutes, tied a career high with 15 points while adding eight rebounds, eight assists and four steals for NYU.
"Annie's stat line doesn't even show how hard she works," Barber added. "She's a leader out there, and it's nice when she steps up and scores because she can. I'm just really proud of her, because that's what you need from a senior leader if you want to win in this league."
Jenny Walker (Sausalito, CA/Redwood) led all scorers with 21 points. Shelton finished with 13,
Janean Cuffee (New York, NY/The Lawrenceville School) had 10 and Foos contributed nine points and seven rebounds..
Kristina Schmelter led Washington with 18 points.
"A win like this gives us a lot of momentum going home," Barber added.
The Violets return to action on Friday, January 31, when they host UAA-opponent Carnegie Mellon University. Tip-off at the Sportsplex in Manhattan is set for 6:00pm
