Violets Defeat Carnegie Mellon in UAA Contest

The New York University women's basketball team defeated Carnegie Mellon University 71-49 in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest on Friday, January 31, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.

The Violets (14-3, 4-2) led from start-to-finish, scoring the first seven points of the game and racing out to a 15-2 lead.

NYU led 28-13 after the first quarter, 45-31 at halftime and 61-40 after three quarters. The Violets' lead peaked at 27 points, 71-44, on Annie Barrett's (Cambridge, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) free throws with 5:15 remaining in the game.

The Tartans (8-9, 1-5), scored the final five points of the contest.

NYU's Janean Cuffee (New York, NY/The Lawrenceville School) finished with a game-high 20 points (16 in the first half), four assists and four steals. Katie Foos (Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) scored 18 points, all on three-pointers (6-of-12), while Alyssa Alvarez (Daly City, CA/Convent of the Sacred Heart) (nine points) connected on all three of her long-distance attempts.

"I thought Janean's defense really sparked her offense tonight," said Head Coach Meg Barber. "Her defensive pressure really got us going. She was a catalyst for us in insuring that we got our first win of the weekend."

Barrett, who leads NCAA Division III in assists per game, added a game-high 10 on Friday.

Jenny Walker (Sausalito, CA/Redwood) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for the Violets.

"Jenny's out there having fun and creating things with her effort," Barber explained. "It's great to see a freshman doing these things late in the season. Every single day she's getting better and doing more things for us on the court. She's making a big impact inside for us."

Makayla Filiere led Carnegie Mellon with 10 points.

"We shared the ball tonight with 20 assists on 24 made baskets, which is a great sign," Barber revealed. "Our goal is to get better every day, and we have another one on Sunday against Case. Just super proud of our effort tonight."

The Violets return to the court on Super Bowl Sunday, February 2, when they host Case Western Reserve University in another UAA affair. Tip-off is set for 2:00pm at the Sportsplex.
