The New York University women's swimming & diving team, ranked #6 in the nation by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), competed against host #10 Williams College and #8 Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the Williams Tri-Meet on Friday, January 24, in Williamstown, MA.
The Violets came up short against both schools, being outscored 157.50-142.50 by MIT and 193-107 by Williams.
NYU's swimmers won three events in total.
Ashley Brodnick (Raleigh, NC/Leesville Road) got things started with a commanding victory in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:22.48), finishing over 10 seconds ahead of the second-place swimmer. Next was
Honore Collins (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township), who narrowly edged out the competition to take first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.83). Lastly,
Sydney Catron (Alexandria, VA/Bishop O'Connell) earned a win in the 200-yard backstroke after finishing with a time of 2:03.40.
"Though we lost all the meets, all of them were super close," noted Head Coach
Trevor Miele. "Had our women's 200 free relay not been disqualified for a relay exchange, they would have beaten MIT."
In the diving events,
Carmen White (Lake Bluff, IL/Lake Forest) led all Violets with a score of 298.50 and a second-place finish in the three-meter diveing event. Also competing in the event were
Ashlyn Winship (Richardson, TX/Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science) (258.60) and
Katherine Nardone (Weston, MA/Weston) (232.43) who finished in fifth and seventh, respectively.
"This was easily the most competitive meet we've had," added Diving Coach
Todd Kolean. "With Carmen taking second and Ashlyn and Katherine competing at the highest level, it was an outstanding day."
"While it is disappointing to lose the meet, I was very happy with how we performed for this time of the year," concluded Miele.
The Violets will be back in action on Friday, February 7, when they host day one of the NYU Invitational at the Palladium Athletic Facility Natatorium in Manhattan.
