Violets drop 1-0 decision in Newark, NJ

The New York University men's soccer team was defeated by Rutgers-Newark University on Sunday, September 8, in Newark, NJ.

The Scarlet Raiders' lone goal came in the 48th minute when a ball off of the boot of Dino Branco found the back of the net.

The Scarlet Raiders are now 3-2 this season, while the Violets fall to 0-4.

The Violets had the edge statistically in the first half, taking five shots to only four for the Scarlet Raiders. NYU tallied 19 shots for the day. The Violets and the Scarlet Raiders each took two corner kicks over the game's first 45 minutes.

Between the posts, NYU goalkeeper Luca Manuso saved five of the six shots he faced.

"We let too many opportunities go today," said Head Coach Kim Wyant.  "We need our team to remain unified and identify the areas where we can improve moving forward."

Juniors Jake Velvel (Washington, D.C./Georgetown Day School) and Santiago Huertas (Bogota, Colombia/Archbishop McCarthy) were named to the Brick City Classic All-Tournament Team.

The Violets return to action when they host Baruch College in the first home game of the season on Saturday, September 14, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY. The game is scheduled to begin at noon.
