NYU Loses a Pair of Close Games to CWRU

Violets Continue UAA Play Next Weekend in St. Louis

The New York University baseball team dropped a pair of games to Case Western Reserve University in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Sunday, April 7, at MCU Park in Brooklyn.

CWRU (17-8, 4-2 UAA) won the first game 3-1 in 11 innings, before taking the second game 5-3 to complete the four-game series sweep over NYU (13-7, 2-4 UAA).

The Violets got on the scoreboard in both games, but were unable to hold onto their early leads.

In game one, NYU scored in the first inning when Colman Hendershot singled home Jack Walter. The lead remained 1-0 until Spartans' catcher Jake Ryan hit a home run to tie the contest in the top of the third inning. Neither team was able to score another run until Case Western Reserve plated a pair of runs in the 11th inning. NYU did have its chances to go ahead or win the game, including in the bottom of the 10th inning when they had the bases loaded and only one out. The Spartans were able to get out of that jam with a pop up and a line out and took control of the game an inning later.

The Violets also scored a run in the top of the first in game two, this time when Jack Elias singled home Ryan McLaughlin. The Spartans answered immediately, however, putting up four runs in the top of the second. NYU was never able to get the margin less than two the rest of the way. Hendershot's home run in the eighth inning cut the deficit to two, but he would be the Violets' final baserunner of the game.

Sal Cammisulli pitched well in game one, tossing 7.0 innings, while scattering five hits and only one walk. The junior's ERA is now 1.27 through 28.1 innings this season. In game two, Zach Cohen was impressive out of the bullpen, throwing 4.1 scoreless innings. Cohen, a junior, struck out three Spartans and did not walk a batter.

The Violets return to the diamond on Friday, April 12, when they continue their UAA schedule and open a four-game series at Washington University in St. Louis. First pitch of Friday's contest is slated for 3pm (CT).
