NYU Baseball Falls Twice at #10 WashU

Violets and Bears to Conclude Four-Game Series with Doubleheader on Saturday

The New York University baseball team dropped a pair of games to Washington University in St. Louis in a University Athletic Association (UAA) doubleheader on Friday, April 12, in St. Louis, MO.

WashU (22-3-1, 8-0 UAA), which came into the weekend ranked #10 by d3baseball.com, won the first game 12-2 in seven innings before taking game two 5-4 to complete the doubleheader sweep over NYU (13-9, 0-6 UAA).

Colman Hendershot's two-run home run in the top of the first put the Violets ahead by a pair of runs early, but the NYU offense went dry after that.

WashU answered with a run in the bottom of the first to cut the NYU lead in half, then scored three more times in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead for good.

The Bears scored two runs in the fifth and two more in the six before a four-run seventh gave the hosts the victory, via the 10-run rule.

Jack Walter, Ryan McLaughlin and Zane Baker each tallied two hits to lead the NYU offense in the opener.

In game two, the Violets once again got on the scoreboard first as Walter scored on an RBI-groundout from Jack Elias in the first inning to give NYU a 1-0 advantage.

The Violets doubled their lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning when McLaughlin collected a hit to score Walter. The Bears answered, however, in the bottom of the inning, with four runs to take a 4-2 lead.

NYU didn't go down easy this time, as a home runs from Walter and McLaughlin tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh inning. WashU answered again, however, scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the inning to lead 5-4.

The Violets couldn't come back for a second time, as they stranded the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning.

Walter was 4-for-5 at the plate to lead NYU, who also got multi-hit games from McLaughlin and Hendershot as the squad out-hit WashU 11-6 in the game-two loss.

The Violets and Bears will conclude their four-game series on Saturday when they play another doubleheader starting at 10am (CT) in St. Louis.
