The New York University softball team swept a doubleheader against local foe Hunter College on Thursday, April 4, at Bohoshy Field in the Bronx.
NYU won game one 7-4 before taking the second game 10-2 in five innings, and is now 13-5 on the season. The visiting Hawks saw their overall record drop to 7-6.
Hunter scored a run in the first inning and three more in the third to jump out to a 4-0 lead in the opener.
The NYU pitching staff shut the Hawks down from there and the Violet bats quickly came to life with four runs in the home half of the third inning to tie the contest.
Serena Ponciano's RBI groundout put the Violets on the scoreboard and
Claire Stefanelli followed with a two-run home run to make the score 4-3.
Rachel Colbus' sacrifice fly later in the inning tied the game.
The game remained 4-4 until the bottom of the sixth when the Violets tacked on three unearned runs. Ponciano and Stefanelli each recorded their third RBIs of the game during the rally.
Scarlett Murphy took over in the circle in the fourth inning for NYU and pitched 3.2 scoreless innings en route to her fourth victory of the season.
Olivia Mould earned the save, striking out the only batter she face as she relieved Murphy with two outs in the seventh inning and the tying runner on deck.
The Hawks scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first inning in game two to take another early lead, but the Violets were once again able to come from behind for the victory.
Sarah Mehrle's sacrifce fly in the second inning cut the deficit in half and the Violets plated a pair of runners in the third to take a 3-2 lead. The first of those two runs came on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Colbus and the second came around to score later on the play.
Ashley Mains' two-RBI single in the fourth inning gave the Violets a 5-2 lead and some breathing room. NYU scored five more times in the fifth to take a 10-2 lead and end the contest.
Maggie Swan pitched 5.0 innings and didn't allow an earned run to win the game and improve to 4-2 on the season. The freshmen now has a team-best 1.20 ERA in 41.0 innings pitched this season.
NYU's 13-5 start is the best in the five-year history of the program.
The Violets continue their busy home weekend on Friday, April 4 (weather permitting), when host University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Brandeis University in another doubleheader at Bohoshy Field. Game one is slated to begin at 4pm in the Bronx.
