King's Walk-Off Blast Propels NYU to Series Sweep

Violets Take All Three Games from WashU

The New York University softball team's senior class has their eyes set on a potential NCAA Tournament Berth and their work this weekend helped get the squad one step closer.

Senior Diana King's two-run walk-off home run gave the Violets a 4-3 victory and University Athletic Association (UAA) three-game series sweep over Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday, April 21, at Pace University's field in Pleasantville, NY. NYU took the first two games of the series on Friday at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY, winning game one on a walk-off home run off the bat of senior Ashley Mains and game two behind solid pitching from Karissa Zubulake, another senior.

Zubulake went the distance in the circle on Sunday and didn't allow an earned run to earn her second victory of the weekend.

WashU (13-14, 4-7 UAA) scored three unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie, but NYU (18-11, 6-7) quickly got a run back when Serena Ponciano singled home King in the bottom half of the inning.

The game remained 3-1 until the bottom of the seventh. The Violets made the score 3-2 when Kalena Paredes scored on Lauren Kong's RBI-groundout. Rachel Colbus followed with a pinch hit single before King's blast over the left field wall gave NYU the victory and the series sweep.

King and Paredes each collected two hits to lead the NYU offense, while Zubulake's six-strikeout performance tied her second most this season.

Both squads came into the weekend ranked atop their respective regions as NYU held the top spot in the Northeast Region and WashU was ranked first in the Midwest Region. The second set of regional rankings will be published on Thursday, April 25.

The Violets return to the diamond on Friday, April 26, when they begin a four-game UAA series against Carnegie Mellon University at Bohoshy Field in the Bronx. Game one of Friday's doubleheader is scheduled for 2pm.
