The New York University baseball team improved its winning streak to five with a road doubleheader sweep of University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Brandeis University on Friday, April 19, in Waltham, MA.
NYU (18-9, 4-6 UAA), won game one 6-5, before taking the second game 15-10 to complete the sweep against Brandeis (12-16, 0-10 UAA).
The Violets trailed 4-1 in the opener, but rallied with a three-run sixth inning highlighted by a 2-RBI single from
Zane Baker to tie the game. Brandeis scored in the home half of the inning to re-take the lead, but NYU answered immediately with the final two runs of the contest on a Brandeis error and an RBI single from
Colman Hendershot in the top of the seventh.
Jack Walter led the Violets with three hits in the game one victory, while Hendershot, Baker and
Coltrane Tait each collected a pair.
Zach Cohen only pitched 0.1 innings, but earned the mound win to improve to 3-0 on the season, while
Joseph Prisco pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his eighth save.
In game two, NYU led 4-1 early, but the Judges rallied to tie the game in the second inning. It remained close until an eight-run sixth inning put NYU ahead 14-5 and the Violets held on to win 15-10.
Jack Elias knocked in four runs and had three hits to lead the Violets' offense, while
Chris Cassandra tallied three RBIs and also hit safely three times.
John Gassler came out of the bullpen to pitch two innings earned the win for NYU. Prisco once again pitched a perfect ninth inning and struck out a pair of hitters in a non-save situation.
The Violets and Judges are scheduled to complete their four-game series on Sunday, April 21, with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00am. The games are set to be played at Victory Field in Watertown, MA.
