The New York University baseball team swept a University Athletic Association (UAA) doubleheader against Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday, April 13, in St. Louis, MO.
The Violets (15-9, 2-6) won the first game 8-6 and the nitecap 4-2.
In the opener, the Violets scored a pair of runs in four different innings. They had an early 4-0 lead, but the Bears (22-5-1, 8-2), ranked #10 in the nation by
D3baseball.com, caught up. They took another two-run lead, and the Bears caught up.
However, when the Violets tallied their final two runs in the seventh inning, the Bears did not score again.
Colman Hendershot and
Ryan McLaughlin each had three hits for NYU, with Hendershot also knocking in three runs.
Jack Elias contributed two hits and two RBIs.
Zach Cohen got the win with 1.1 innings of relief and
Joseph Prisco earned his sixth save with two perfect innings.
The Violets also struck first in the second game, scoring single runs in the first two innings. They were plated by Elias in the first and
Cooper Halpern in the second.
But, following a similar pattern, Wash U. tied the game with two runs in the fifth.
The score remained even until the eighth inning.
Chris Cassandra opened the frame with a double and the Violets went on to score two unearned runs.
Ford Ladd recorded the win by getting the final out of the seventh and Prisco again went two shutout innings to record his seventh save.
The Violets return to action this Wednesday, April 17, when they host St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn at MCU Park in Brooklyn. First pitch is set for 4:00pm.
