The New York University softball team split its doubleheader against host Emory University in a pair of University Athletic Association (UAA) games on Friday, April 12, in Atlanta, GA.
The Violets (14-10, 2-6) dropped the first game 4-3 in 10 innings, but came back to win the nitecap 5-2 over the Eagles (22-8, 8-2).
NYU took a 2-0 lead in the opener on RBI ground outs by
Rachel Colbus and
Kalena Paredes in the second and third innings, respectively. But, a three-run third inning put Emory in front.
That lead remained until the Violets rallied in the seventh.
Diana King doubled to open the frame, stole third base and came home on
Serena Ponciano's single.
The game remained deadlocked until the Eagles' Jenna Wilson hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the tenth.
Maggie Swan went eight innings before giving way to
Cassi Parulis, who suffered the loss.
Ponciano and
Claire Stefanelli each had three hits for the Violets, while King contributed a pair.
Karissa Zubulake went the distance for NYU in the nitecap. She only gave up four hits, while neither of the Eagles' runs were earned.
Stefanelli had another three hits, while
Ashley Mains drove in two runs.
"Our pitchers threw great today and we had some timely hitting," said Head Coach
Now-Allah James. "It was a disappointing end to the first game, but we rebounded well in the second game. That should give us momentum going into tomorrow."
The two teams will be back at it on Saturday for another doubleheader beginning at 1:00pm.
