For a second consecutive day, the New York University softball team split its University Athletic Association (UAA) doubleheader against Emory University in Atlanta, GA. On Saturday, April 13, the Violets won the opening game 5-2 and were edged 4-3 in the second game of the twinbill.
On Friday, each team won its game by the exact same scores.
In the opener on Saturday,
Claire Stefanelli and
Serena Ponciano each had two hits, driving in two runs and one run, respectively.
The Violets (15-11, 3-7) received strong mound work from
Cassi Parulis, who gave up only one hit in four innings of relief and earned the victory. Starter
Maggie Swan went the first three innings.
In the second game, all the runs were scored in the fifth inning.
NYU jumped on top with RBI singles from
Lauren Kong,
Diana King and Stefanelli.
However, after tossing four shutout innings,
Karissa Zubulake was tagged for four runs by the Eagles (23-9, 9-3) in the bottom of the fifth.
Olivia Mould came on to pitch 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, but the Violets could not muster another run.
"We proved that we can play with all the teams in the UAA," said Head Coach
Now-Allah James. "We're pitching really well and our bench also contributed today. It was an overall great team effort throughout the weekend."
The Violets return to action next weekend when they host Washington University in St. Louis for a UAA four-game series on Friday and Saturday, April 19-20. The games will be held at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY. Friday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1:00pm.
