Softball Splits Against Babson

Violets Beat Beavers 6-1 and Fall 12-10

The New York University women's softball team split its doubleheader with Babson College on Wednesday, March 20, in Plant City, FL.

The Violets (5-3) won the first game 6-1, but dropped the nitecap 12-10 to the Beavers (3-5).

All seven runs of the first game were scored in the opening two innings.

After the Beavers plated a run in the top of the first, the Violets countered by scoring three times in both the bottom of the first and second innings.

Claire Stefanelli's two-run home run and Ashley Mains' solo shot provided the three first-inning runs. In the second frame, Stefanelli, Diana King and Serena Ponciano each recorded RBI singles.

Scarlett Murphy picked up the victory with five innings of work, allowing six hits and striking out two. Olivia Mould pitched two shutout innings in relief.

The Violets dropped the second game despite two home runs and four RBIs from Kalena Paredes.

NYU took a 2-0 lead In the top of the first as King scored on a double steal and Stefanelli had an RBI single. Peredes' solo home run in the top of the second and three-run blast in the fourth knotted the game at 6-6.

The game was still tied 7-7 before Babson's two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth broke it open.

The Violets did score three runs in the top of the seventh on a combination of hits and errors, but the rally fell short.

Ponciano finished with three hits and three runs scored, while Mains contributed two RBIs.

Cassi Parulis, who went 3.2 innings in relief of starter Karissa Zubulake, suffered the loss for NYU.

"We're resilient, never out of a game," said Head Coach Now-Allah James. "We have different people stepping up each game. No one has to be perfect, but we just have to keep getting better and better every day."

The Violets return to action on Friday, March 22, for their final two games of the Florida trip. They will face The College of New Jersey at 10:00am and Oswego State at 2:30pm in Plant City.
